One minute you're buying school supplies in August, and the next you're googling "senior photographer near me" in April while simultaneously figuring out graduation gowns, college decisions, and party plans. The Honest Reality About Timing (From Someone Who's Seen It All)
Every single year, I get an inquiry in May from a family who needs senior portraits before graduation. And whenever I can, I do my best to make it work. But here's what that kind of timing actually looks like: a session squeezed into an already overwhelming stretch of senior year, with editing and gallery delivery taking at least three to four weeks after we shoot. That's three to four weeks on top of college decisions, grad party planning, and everything else piling up at once.
I totally get (Type B parent right here). But it doesn't have to feel that way. And honestly, with just a little bit of forethought, it won't.
There Is No Single "Right Time" - But There Are Things Worth Considering
I want to be clear about something: there is no universally perfect month to book senior photos. What matters is thinking through what your senior actually needs and when they need it.

What season feels right for your senior?
Fall light in the Triangle is something special. Spring has its own beauty. Winter can be moody and striking in the best way. Your senior's personality, their style, and even where they're applying to school can all factor into what season will feel most like them.
Are there any upcoming deadlines that require a photo?
This is the one families overlook most often. It's not just the yearbook. Think about:

Sorority or fraternity rush photos
Roommate selection profiles
Graduation announcements
How full is senior year actually going to be?
Senior year is not a slow year. It's packed - with games, performances, college visits, AP exams, senior events, and a hundred other things that feel urgent. Booking photos when life is still a little more spacious means the session can actually be something your senior looks forward to, rather than one more thing to get through.
My Best Advice: Book Early, Even If You're Not Shooting Yet
Here's what I wish every family in Durham and the Triangle knew before they even started looking for a photographer:
Even if you don't plan to have the session until spring, the summer before or early fall of your senior year is a great time to go ahead and book.
Once you're booked, I take the reins on planning. You get to check it off your mental to-do list and save that mental space for everything else that's coming. You're locked in, we have a plan, and there's nothing left to worry about on that front.
And here's a little bonus that comes with booking earlier in the year: if we shoot in the fall or winter, you'll have photos ready whenever you need a quick picture to send with an application or a profile. If you choose to wait and book in the spring, there's actually something kind of wonderful about that too - by then, your senior will likely have their college decision made, and we can incorporate some school spirit wear into the session. Why This Actually Matters
Senior photos are a funny thing. They feel like a logistical task, but they are so much more than that.
